Hamada Hospital’s Breast Care department, staffed entirely by female doctors and technicians, provides comprehensive services from initial screening to detailed follow-up examinations for breast cancer and other breast conditions. Q. Is a breast cancer screening or detailed examination painful?
A. In a mammography examination, the breast is compressed between plates, so although it varies from person to person, it may involve some pain. We take care to help you undergo the examination as relaxed as possible, so please rest assured. For detailed examinations (fine-needle aspiration cytology or needle biopsy), a local anesthetic is used, so severe pain is uncommon. If you have any concerns, please feel free to tell your doctor or technician.
Q. How does a breast cancer screening differ from the breast (mammary gland) outpatient clinic?
A. breast cancer screening is intended for people without symptoms, with the aim of early detection of breast cancer. The breast (mammary gland) outpatient clinic, on the other hand, is a specialized clinic for people who have symptoms such as a lump in the breast or discharge from the nipple, or who have been assessed as needing a detailed examination in a screening. We perform examinations and detailed tests, reach a diagnosis, and consider future treatment plans. Please book according to your own situation.
Q. Might the examination sometimes be handled by a male doctor or technician?
A. Our breast (mammary gland) outpatient clinic is staffed by female doctors and female technicians. From the consultation through mammography and breast ultrasound (echo) examinations, everything is handled by female staff, so we hope you can receive care in a relaxed manner. Please feel free to consult us about even sensitive concerns.
Q. I was told at a breast cancer screening that I need a detailed examination. Should I come in right away?
A. If you are assessed as needing a detailed examination at a breast cancer screening, it does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer, but it is necessary to properly check whether it is benign or malignant. Please do not leave it unattended based on your own judgment; visit the breast (mammary gland) outpatient clinic as soon as possible. Our hospital offers detailed examinations. When booking, it will go smoothly if you have your screening results on hand and call us.
Q. I have no symptoms, but can I have just a breast cancer screening?
A. Yes, we also offer breast cancer screening for people without symptoms. At our Ladies’ Health Checkup Center on the 4th floor of the hospital, we offer several courses combining mammography and breast ultrasound (echo) examinations. Screening is by complete reservation only, so please choose your desired course and book by phone. Regular screening is very important for the early detection of breast cancer.
