Fertility Screening

Fertility Screening

If you have been trying to conceive without success, understanding your body is the first step. At Hamada Hospital’s Center for Reproductive Medicine in Ochanomizu, our board-certified specialists conduct systematic fertility screenings to accurately identify the causes of infertility. These causes can originate from the female partner, the male partner, both, or a combination of factors. Based on the results, we will work with you to create an optimal treatment plan. A full course of tests may take one to several months, as some tests must be performed at specific times in the menstrual cycle.

Fertility Screening for Women

  • Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Charting: Tracks your menstrual cycle and helps determine if ovulation is occurring.
  • Hormone Blood Tests: Measures levels of hormones related to pregnancy (e.g., LH, FSH, prolactin, estrogen) and checks for infections like Chlamydia, which can cause infertility.
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG): An X-ray exam using contrast dye to check for blockages or abnormalities in the fallopian tubes and uterus. (Note: HSG is only available to patients undergoing treatment at our hospital.)
  • Postcoital Test (Huhner Test): Examines the interaction between sperm and cervical mucus to ensure sperm can travel into the uterus.
  • Laparoscopy: A minimally invasive surgical procedure to directly observe the pelvic organs, used when other tests suggest abnormalities like endometriosis or adhesions.

Fertility Screening for Men

  • Semen Analysis: Evaluates sperm count, motility, and morphology to identify potential male-factor infertility. Approximately half of infertility cases involve a male factor, making it crucial for both partners to be tested.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does fertility testing hurt?

A. It depends on the test. Blood draws, internal (pelvic) examinations, and hysterosalpingography (imaging of the uterus and fallopian tubes) may involve some discomfort, but we take care to keep any burden on you as small as possible. If you are worried about pain, please feel free to tell your doctor or a staff member.

Q. How much do the tests cost?

A. It varies depending on the tests performed and whether health insurance applies. At your first visit we will explain the approximate schedule and costs, so please rest assured. Some tests are provided as self-pay (non-insured) care.

Q. Is it better to come together with my partner?

A. Infertility is an issue for both partners as a couple. If possible, we encourage you to come to the clinic together. Especially at the first visit, we recommend that you listen to the explanation of the upcoming tests and treatment plan together.

Q. Can I be seen by a specialist?

A. Yes. At our <a href=”https://obatakai.or.jp/gairai/funin/”>Infertility and Reproductive Medicine Center</a>, a reproductive medicine specialist certified by the Japan Society for Reproductive Medicine is in charge of care. Based on specialized knowledge and extensive experience, we provide the most suitable medical care for each individual.

Q. How do I make an appointment?

A. You can book via our online reservation system or by phone (<a href=”tel:0352801166″ class=”hmd-tel”>03-5280-1166</a>). Please first make a first-visit appointment for “Gynecology.”

Q. Is it close to Ochanomizu Station?
