Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Hamada Hospital offers Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), also known as Artificial Insemination by Husband (AIH), as a next step in fertility treatment for couples who have not conceived through timed intercourse. This procedure is performed by specialists certified by the Japan Society for Reproductive Medicine. IUI supports fertilization by placing specially prepared sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation, increasing the chances of conception. The subsequent process of fertilization and implantation occurs naturally, just as in a spontaneous pregnancy.
Who is a candidate for IUI?
- Couples with male factor infertility, such as low sperm count or motility.
- Cases involving sexual dysfunction (e.g., ED) or ejaculatory disorders.
- Couples with female factor infertility, including low cervical mucus or the presence of anti-sperm antibodies.
- Unexplained infertility where timed intercourse has been unsuccessful.
The IUI Process
- Ovulation Tracking: We precisely determine the day of ovulation using transvaginal ultrasound to time the procedure. Ovulation-inducing medication may be used if necessary.
- Sperm Preparation: On the day of the procedure, a semen sample is collected and processed in our lab to wash and concentrate the most motile, healthy sperm.
- Insemination: The prepared sperm is gently injected into the uterus using a very thin, flexible catheter. The procedure itself is quick, largely painless, and requires only a brief rest period at the hospital.
- Pregnancy Test: A pregnancy test is performed approximately two weeks after the IUI procedure.
